North Kitsap’s Alex Smith throws no-hitter in win over Port Angeles
POULSBO — North Kitsap High School pitcher Alex Smith threw a no-hitter Monday in a 4-0 win over the visiting Port Angeles Roughriders.
Smith, a junior, has not pitched a no-hitter since he was a little leaguer.
“It feels great,” Smith said after the game. “I felt good all game, and it felt good to throw the way I did.”
Smith also struck out eight batters in the win.
“He got ahead of hitters,” North Kitsap coach Jeff Weible said. “And when he gets ahead of hitters he’s pretty tough, because he can throw a couple different pitches, and he had them all working today.”
Despite not allowing a hit, Smith and the Viking defense let three Port Angeles players get on base with two errors and one hit batter. It was the second shutout in as many games for the Vikings. Senior Daniel Jewett allowed just five hits Friday in a 4-0 win over Klahowya.
North Kitsap improved to 10-0 with Monday’s win.
“That’s the key to success, having good pitching and defense,” Weible said. “It’s been that way the last two games. The last two teams we’ve played, we’ve gotten good pitching performances from their guys, so we’ve done enough offensively to win games. So I’m pretty happy with the way we’re playing.”
