Sports briefs: Loads of summer camps on the way
NK spring football kicks off
The North Kitsap High School football team begins spring football Tuesday, for all interested players currently in grades eight through 11. Scrimmages will be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and June 8, 9 and 10. The team will meet at the NKHS Main Gym at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. Players should bring cleats and athletic gear. Kitsap Baseball splits first double header
The Kitsap Baseball Senior Legion team, which includes a number of players from the North Kitsap area, opened its summer season in Longview Friday with a double header against Longview Red Lion. Kitsap fell 7-5 in the first game, but came back to win 5-4 in game two. Elliot Thorsen picked up the win in game two. Kingston's Daniel Orr went 2-for-4 in the win.
NK Little League gathering at BlueJackets game
North Kitsap Little League invites fans to attend a Kitsap Bluejackets baseball game, Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Babe Ruth Field at Snider Park. The cost is $10 per car load and the concession stand will be open.
Soap box championships race into Poulsbo
The Kitsap Soap Box Derby Association hosts the local All-American Soap Box Derby Championship race Sunday, on Dauntless Drive in Poulsbo. Driver check-in begins at 7 a.m. and races will take place all day. Inspection and weigh-ins will be Saturday at DME Auto Center, 19820 7th Ave. NE, Poulsbo, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Winners of the local championship stock and super stock races will compete July 25 at the 72nd Annual All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship in Akron, Ohio. Local racers already qualified to compete in Akron include Jennifer Lovato, Tommy Walters, Ryan Wixson and Hannah Welzbacker.
Basketball camps tip off in Kingston
Kingston High School will host two basketball camps this summer for youth and high school students. Both camps will be held from June 29-July 3 in the KHS gym. The high school camp, for players entering grades nine through 12, will run from 9 a.m. to noon, and cost is $80. The youth camp, for players entering grades three through eight, will run from 1-3 p.m., and cost is $70. Fees for both camps include the cost of T-shirts and prizes. BlueJackets announce Hawaiian Escape contest
The Kitsap BlueJackets baseball team and the West Coast League this week announced the inaugural Hawaiian Escape, sponsored by Hawaiian Airlines and the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel in Honolulu. Eight grand prize winners will receive two roundtrip tickets to Hawaii from either Seattle or Portland and a five-night stay at the Beachcomber hotel, along with four tickets to a 2010 Mariner game. Winners will be chosen in a league-wide drawing August 10. Contestants must be at least 21 years old, and entries will be accepted at BlueJacket home games through July 29. Other prizes include an autographed BlueJacket baseball bat and ball. Games are played at the Kitsap Fairgrounds and Events Center, at 1200 NW Fairgrounds Road, Bremerton. Adult lacrosse league swings into Poulsbo
The first-ever co-ed adult summer lacrosse league in North Kitsap will begin June 23 and play every Tuesday through August 11. The league is open to all post-high school players regardless of residency. Teams will have equal numbers of men and women and women's lacrosse rules will apply. The emphasis will be on fun. Games will be played at the North Kitsap Stadium in Poulsbo, from 6:30-8 p.m. Register by June 20 at the Poulsbo Parks and Recreation office at 19540 Front St. The league fee is $50 per player. Summer camps teach lacrosse skills
The North Kitsap Lacrosse team offers two summer lacrosse camps for boys and girls entering grades three through 12. Both camps will take place from June 22-26 at the North Kitsap Stadium in Poulsbo, and are open to all interested players, regardless of residency. The camp for players entering grades three through eight goes from 9 a.m. to noon, and the ninth- to 12th-grade camp runs from 4-7 p.m. Registration is through Poulsbo Parks and Recreation, located at 19540 Front St. The deadline for registration is June 13. Camp fee is $60. All players must provide their own mouth guards and cleats. Loaner equipment is available with a $30 deposit for a stick, and $50 for goggles.
