Bucs win District Tournament with first-half goal | Boys soccer
POULSBO — The Buccaneers and Vikings will compete at state, but they won't have to travel far.
The varsity teams host their opponents in the first round of the 2A State Boys Soccer Tournament starting at 5 p.m., May 20, at North Kitsap Stadium.
The Vikings (15-4) play Archbishop Murphy at 5 p.m. The Bucs (17-2) play Orting at 7 p.m.
The Bucs enter the tournament as the West Central District champions.
On May 17, the Bucs defeated the Franklin Pierce Cardinals 1-0 at North Kitsap Stadium in the District Tournament. The only goal of the game occurred in the 27th minute, when Kingston sophomore Alex Hernandez crossed the ball over to freshman Brady Vernik for the shot on goal.
The Bucs and Cardinals were playing at a similar pace until the goal, then the Bucs picked it up, according to Kingston head coach Craig Smith.
The Bucs "dominated" possession in the second half, according to Smith.
"Alex Newton and Tommy Nitchman played some of their best Kingston ball so far and they both played in District tournaments since they were freshman," Craig wrote to the Herald.
Kingston goalkeeper Alex Worland played his usual, strong game, according to Smith.
With the championship also comes the No. 1 seed into the state tournament.
The Bucs face the Orting Cardinals (13-3); Orting defeated the Klahowya Eagles 1-0 to advance to state.
The Vikings enter the State tournament, after a 3-2 win over the Foster Bulldogs at Renton Memorial Stadium, May 17. The Vikes earned the No. 3 seed from the West Central District Tournament.
The Vikings play Archbishop Murphy Wildcats (16-3) in the first round.
The Wildcats were the Cascade Conference champions and placed third in the District 1/2 Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Sedro-Woolley in the finals.
