Vikes volleyball, soccer seek league titles
POULSBO — The Vikings could bring home two championships Oct. 28.
The girls varsity soccer and volleyball teams are both in the running for Olympic League titles.
Though the soccer team is 14-0 and guaranteed a top seed into the Olympic League tournament, head coach Chris May said the Vikings will be looking to finish the season strong. The Vikings’ last game is against the Kingston Buccaneers, Oct. 28 at North Kitsap Stadium at 6:45 p.m.
“Obviously, we want to finish the season strong,” he said. “Last game against Kingston has no bearing on title, but it’s still for the NK Cup.”
Before league play resumed Thursday, the Vikings were first in the league. The top five teams in the league — Klahowya Eagles (12-3), Bucs (11-3), Olympic Trojans (9-5), Bremerton Knights (6-8) — are looking forward to the league tournament, which will decide seeding to the district tournament, Nov. 9. The Port Angeles Roughriders (5-9) were just behind the Knights, looking to take the fifth-place seed to the league tourney.
After the regular season wraps up, May said it’s anyone’s guess who will advance through post-season. The top four teams in the league, which have separated themselves from the rest, “are a cut above,” he said.
“Any of those four teams, on any given day, could beat the other,” May said. Nothing is locked up for the district or state tournament, he added.
Though the Vikings’ volleyball team isn’t as comfortable at the top of the standings as their soccer-playing peers, the team is battling for a title as well.
The Vikings and Roughriders were tied as of Thursday, with a 6-0 record. The team’s were scheduled to play Thursday night; the winner would be a game ahead and one step closer to taking the League title outright.
The Vikings finish the regular season Monday against the Bucs in the North Kitsap Gymnasium, at 6:15 p.m.
