POULSBO — There was a lot to celebrate Wednesday night when the North Kitsap Vikings defeated the Sequim Wolves at their final home meet.

The Vikes won 57-12, winning 10 of the 14 matches in the North Kitsap High School Gymnasium.

Those in attendance saw some thrilling matches. They saw Brenden Best pin Sequim’s Brady Young in 25 seconds in the 285-pound division and Josh Tucker pin Kailey Ditlifson in 46 seconds. In fact, seven of the Vikings’ wins were pins.

John Morgan, who pinned Sequim’s Joel Allen in 3:10 (in the third round), was excited to see the Vikes win as a team. It was Morgan’s second high school meet where the Vikes won.

“There were some pretty awesome matches,” Morgan said.

The home meet signifies a wrap-up to the regular season. The Vikes were scheduled to wrestle the Kingston Buccaneers and North Mason Bulldogs Thursday in the final league meet of the season (after the Herald went to press).

The Vikes and Bucs now prepare for sub-Regionals. The tournament begins Feb. 1 at Port Angeles and continues Feb. 2.

The sub-regional is a qualifier for Regionals. Regionals are Feb. 9. Those who make it to Regionals can seed into the Mat Classic XXV in the Tacoma Dome. Wrestling at the state meet begins Feb. 15.

Velarde’s last home win

North Kitsap senior Jake Velarde (145) is the first wrestler in Kitsap County to have a shot at winning four straight high school state championships. On Wednesday, he bid farewell to his home venue by pinning Sequim’s Brett Wright in 1:10.

In 2012, Velarde defeated Deer Park’s Joe Grable at 138 pounds. In 2011, he defeated North Mason’s Pedro Joaquin at 119 pounds. In 2010 Velarde won 3-1 over Olympic’s Cody Yeik at 112 pounds (in the 3A classification).
