NK girls win District championship, qualify for State | Cross country
October 29, 2012 · 12:26 PM
LAKEWOOD — The wet, mucky cross country course at American Lake made for some messy races Oct. 27. The less-than favorable conditions, however, did not slow the North Kitsap High School girls cross country team down.
The girls won the Westside Classic, finishing first. The Westside Classic is the West Central District III championships.
"They all ran really good races," coach Jonathan Erickson said.
Those competing included Reagan Colyer, Kathleen Ramsey, Clara Lund, Olivia Krol, Katrina Weinmann, Sarah Zimmerman and Kristina Reid.
Colyer took first in 19 minutes 10.9 seconds.
Ramsey took second (19:33.3).
Lund finished fourth (20:13.2), behind Sumner's Abby Hensler (20:04.8).
The seven girls — and two alternates (Annika Krol and Maria Warns) — will go to the State championships Nov. 3 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
"We're really excited to be going to State this weekend," Erickson said. "The camaraderie on the girls team has just been so strong."
Though each runner earns a time, Erickson said there is an aspect of teamwork in cross country that is often overlooked. The runners encourage each other and help maintain solid paces.
Ian Christen, Cooper Wall to State
Of the seven runners from the North Kitsap boys cross country team, Ian Crhisten and Cooper Wall advance to State.
Christen finished the Westside Classic in 14th (17:06.3).
Wall finished 29th (17:41.0).
The top 30 individuals from Districts — if their not already going with their team — advance to State.
