State tennis: Kingston's Daniels, Wicklein take 4th
SEATTLE — The only Kingston High School tennis players remaining at State went into the competition uneasy.
After losing to W.F. West’s doubles team Reile Slattery and Aleassa Wren, Kingston’s Lindsey Wicklein and Erica Daniels had two tough matches ahead of them.
But the two senior players gained confidence as they advanced.
“We kept playing our game,” Daniels said.
Their game worked. The team finished fourth in the 2A state competition at the Nordstrom Tennis Center May 26. They defeated Tumwater’s Emily Barclift and McKenzie Click (7-5, 6-3) in the fourth/seventh match.
The two Kingston players have gotten to know how the other plays over the last few years. Daniels said they can predict what is coming. They can set each other up for plays.
Going into State, their strategy was lobbing the ball, getting it over their opponents heads. It worked to an extent.
But when they faced W.F. West — the only team they lost to — a tall player interfered with their strategy.
“[W.F. West] had a really tall girl,” Daniels said. “We couldn’t get the ball over her.”
They ended up hitting the ball to the shorter player, a strategy that eventually led to a 6-4, 6-0 loss and elimination from a shot at the title.
After the loss, Wicklein and Daniels went on to defeat Hockinson’s Tiara Atchley and Jaymie Towne 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. The win guaranteed placing at State.
Daniels said the final match was easier than what the team had already faced.
“It was pretty exciting,” the two said.
Kingston’s Marilyn Fick and Charlotte Kilborn also made a State appearance. They lost 6-1, 6-2 to Selah’s Kaiti Dell and Megan Schrenk and again to Sequim’s Stacy Hanson and Katrina Chan 6-4, 7-5.
Clarkston’s KC McConnell and Ashley Meyers are the 2012 state champions. They defeated Squalicum’s Becca Wilson and Claire Krause 6-3, 7-6(3) for the title.
Fohn takes 7th at State tennis
SEATTLE — Zach Fohn finished his high school tennis career with a seventh-place finish in the state tournament May 26.
Fohn won 6-2, 6-0 against Black Hills’ Jimmy Do, lost to Interlake’s Luat Le 6-2, 6-2, defeated Clarkston’s Drew Adams 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, and lost to Ephrata’s Hunter Sears 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
A win against Sears would have given Fohn fourth.
Interlake’s Connor Garnett is the state champion. He defeated Le 6-1, 6-3 in the championship match.
