Take horns off of Viking sculpture

November 2, 2012 · Updated 2:43 PM

I believe that the sculpture to be unveiled soon as an introduction to Poulsbo on its west side must be amended by removing the horns. There is little evidence from history that Scandinavians added horns to their leather helmets. See the sculpture dedicated to Mayor Lindvig at Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park.

There is the work of Wagner, for example, that depicts heroic examples of Germans wearing horned helmets. The fact is that Scandinavians ceased being Germans long before Wagner took up his pen.
