POULSBO — The North Kitsap School Board on Thursday appointed Poulsbo resident Dan Weedin to the district 2 director position vacated last month by Dan Delaney.
He will be sworn in at the Dec. 10 school board meeting and will serve until Dec. 2011.
Weedin, who coached the North Kitsap High School girls basketball team for six years, said he has long been interested in education issues, but never before had the chance to join the board.
“I always thought about doing it (joining the board), but something always seemed to be in the way,” he said. “When this opportunity came up, I thought, ‘This is an opportunity to jump in.’”
Weedin, 44, works as a consultant for insurance and risk management companies, and as a public speaking coach for various businesses. He has two daughters who attended North Kitsap schools from kindergarten through high school, and has lived in the North Kitsap area since 1993.
Weedin is known in the North Kitsap community as the “voice of the Vikings,” for his role as commentator at North Kitsap High School football and girls basketball games. He said he sees his board membership as a chance to give back to the school district that he believes served his children well.
Weedin said he has not yet developed specific goals for his time on the board. He said for the time being, he is merely trying to become better acquainted with his fellow board members and issues facing the district.
“My initial goal is to get up to speed,” he said. “I come in here with eyes wide open, ready to soak up what I can.”
