KINGSTON — A 56-year-old Suquamish man died after scuba diving in Apple Tree Cove Saturday afternoon, said officials from the Kitsap County Coroner’s office and North Kitsap Fire & Rescue.

Dale Reed and his wife were on their boat in the cove Sept. 11 when Reed put on scuba gear and dove from the boat to retrieve an anchor that had been lost there during a previous visit.

Reed’s wife saw him surface and start swimming back to the boat, but he stopped about 20 feet away and called for a rope. After an unsuccessful rope throw, he apparently lost consciousness, said fire officials.

His wife then dove into the water and brought Reed back to the boat’s swim step where she performed CPR until firefighters arrived.

The crew, which was dispatched shortly after 5 p.m., arrived on the scene via Marine 81, NKF&R’s rescue boat. Medics brought Reed aboard and found he was not breathing and did not have a pulse. They attempted to revive him but were not successful.

The coroner’s office said the cause of death is still pending.
