Fund-raiser for injured PTA member planned

POULSBO — When Poulsbo Junior High PTA Treasurer Renee Parmalee was seriously injured in a car accident Jan. 5, members of the North Kitsap community responded.

They made phone calls, cleaned the house and helped husband Bill Parmalee build a wheelchair ramp and wheelchair-accessible bathroom in the house.

This Friday, the support will continue as the PJH and Breidablik Elementary PTA team up for an evening of food and music.

The fund-raiser dinner will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Jan. 31 in the Poulsbo Junior High cafeteria and gym.

Tickets are a suggested $5 per adult and $3 per child. Those who attend get a full dinner including spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and drink.

Music will be provided by The Rick Allyn Band, which plays rock and blues.

“I expect there’ll be dancing,” said Marcy Salo, the PJH PTA secretary.

Salo said she hopes the evening will prove how supportive the North Kitsap community can be.

“I hope there’s a good turnout,” she said.

The accident left Parmalee in a wheelchair, which she’ll need for six months or more.

The Parmalees’ daughter Kelly, a student at Breidablik Elementary, suffered relatively minor injuries, including two broken ribs, in the accident.

Bill Parmalee called the community support “unbelievably overwhelming.”

He said that neighbors and friends have brought the family food five days a week. The North Kitsap swimming team also held a fund-raising swim-a-thon.

For the Parmalees, whose community involvement includes volunteer time with Little League, Babe Ruth, Pee Wee football, and several PTA organizations, the help came without request.

“When you volunteer your time, you don’t expect to ask for it back; you just volunteer your time — but to have this support is unbelievable and amazing,” said Bill Parmalee.
