District, others add Jan. 14 activities
POULSBO Students in the North Kitsap School District will get a day off on Jan. 14, but that doesnt mean there will be nothing to do.
School wont be taking place because teachers will travel to Olympia and protest potential cuts in education funding. The day will be made up later, when a learning improvement day, which is usually time off for students so teachers can attend workshops, is converted to a normal school day.
In the meantime, several local companies and facilities are offering special activities so the districts students can still take part in activities.
Some of those activities include:
Child care M&M Kids, which usually runs before and after-school care, will offer full-day, drop-in child care at North Kitsap Elementary schools on Jan. 14. Registration forms will be sent by the schools to all parents of elementary students. The forms must be returned with $25 payment no later than Jan. 10 to assure care for each child. Depending on how many children register, child care may be offered at various schools. Registration forms are also available from Chris Case, the community relations coordinator for the district, who can be reached at 779-8703 or 779-8704.
Kids Day at the Marine Science Center Drop-in activities will be offered, including a video, Life at the Edge of the Sea, at 10 a.m. and noon; tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; animal feeding at 11:30 a.m. Kids or group of kids under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Activities are free for MSC members. For non-MSC members, admission for adults is $4, students ages 13-17 is $3, children ages 2-12 is $2. Parents can call 779-5549 for more information.
North Kitsap Community Pool Swimmers of any age can swim from 2 to 5 p.m. at the pool for $1.50 each. No pre-registration is necessary, but swimmers can call 598-1067 for more information.
Sledding and snowshoeing in the Olympic Mountains Olympic Outdoor Center will offer boys and girls from ages 8 and older the chance to sled and snowshoe in the Olympic Mountains. The group will meet at Olympic Outdoor Center at 8 a.m. on Jan. 14 and return at 3:30 p.m. The $49-per-person cost includes snowshoe rental, a lesson and transportation. Six students is the minimum for the trip; 13 is the maximum. Students should bring a sled, change of clothes, lunch, snacks, water bottle, snow jacket, snow pants, gloves, hat, warm socks and goggles. An early (7 a.m.) drop-off is also offered for $5. Survivor Camp Structured after the popular summer challenge camp, and the TV show Survivor, the Survivor Camp will offer a variety of games that will build teamwork, self-esteem, leadership, problem solving and respect. Students will be teamed up with other students to form a camp and learn to problem solve with other camps at the same time, each with varying degrees of difficulty that emphasize the positive development of the mind, body and spirit. Included is an open swim time at the NK pool. (Pool cost included). Students must bring a sack lunch. Tuition is $35. Camp locations will be in Poulsbo area gyms. Camp time runs 8 a.m. through 3 p.m. with early and late drop/pickup available for an extra fee. To register, contact Poulsbo Parks and Recreation at 779-9898.
SportsFest Students will play several kinds of sports and recreational games, including basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, flag football, and soccer. Students are taught fundamentals and skills, and then are organized to play in a scrimmage/intramural game. Teamwork, leadership, character development, skill development and fundamentals are stressed during the day. Participants will also go swimming at the NK Pool during the afternoon. (Pool cost included). Students must bring a sack lunch. Tuition is $35. Camp locations will be in Poulsbo area gyms. Hooky Day at Gordon Children from grades 1-6 are welcome for a day filled with art, games, projects, outdoor activities and exploration. Participants will need to bring appropriate clothing for dry and wet, inside and outside activities and a sack lunch. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gordon Elementary Gym. Breidablik Elementary Students Only Breidablik PTSA is offering child-care from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the first 90 Breidablik students who sign up for the bargain rate of $5 per child. Reading, computer, crafts and science fair activities are planned. Registration forms are being mailed to Breidablik parents.
