Plant sale budding at Poulsbo Junior High
June 10, 2008 · Updated 6:22 PM
POULSBO The Poulsbo Junior High winter plant sale will be in full bloom from Dec. 5-7.
The annual event features poinsettias and hand-made centerpieces, which were constructed by the 140 students in the horticulture program at PJH. The sale will be held on the campuss horticulture site from 2:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Dec. 7.
This is basically student-run. Students take care of the poinsettias, raise them up, take care of the watering and make centerpieces, said horticulture teacher Erin Murphy.
Students, she added, become involved with the projects after time.
The amazing thing is that they start the year and think, Oh, were going to grow some plants and when they see what theyve done, theyre in awe, Murphy remarked.
Students cut their teeth on the easier projects, such as monitoring poinsettias and making centerpieces, before taking on the more-demanding work of bedding plants in the fall. For now, they will concentrate on the always-popular sale.
This is a big community event... its become a hallmark for the season in the community, Murphy said.
