EMS levies fail, treasurer’s race is ‘too close to call’

POULSBO — Permanent Emergency Services Levies for North Kitsap Fire and Rescue and the Poulsbo Fire Department went down in flames in Tuesday’s primary as supporters failed to achieve a 60 percent super majority.

The Kitsap County Fire 18 EMS levy garnered 2,131 pro votes (or 56.81 percent) and 1,620 votes against it for a “no” tally of 43.19 percent. While Poulsbo did slightly betters on its permanent levy the 1,741 (57.03) percent “yes” tally was not enough. In Poulsbo, 1,312 or 42.97 percent of the people voted against the creation of a ongoing EMS levy.

Kitsap County Treasurer’s candidates Barbara Stephenson and Paulette Alvarado are still on pins and needles as their race is too close to call. The Poulsbo residents were separated by less than 300 votes with Stephenson (D) in the lead with 15,828 votes or 49.92 percent of the count and Alvarado (D) with 15,553 votes or 49.05 percent. There were 326 write-in votes as well.

In the 23rd District, Legislative position 2, democrat Sherry Appleton will challenge republican Bev Woods in November after topping Terry Ducheane in the primary by earning 7,733 votes. Ducheane had 2,063 and Woods took 10,311 or 51.18 percent of the overall tally.
