Bainbridge Police nab second video suspect

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — It was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for Hollywood Video robbery suspect John W. Grantham last Friday.

The 20-year-old Bremerton resident was on the Poulsbo Police Department’s most wanted list for his alleged role in an April 28 crime at the 10th Avenue business. He and 24-year-old Armand R. Le Beau were wanted for robbing Hollywood at gun point, binding two employees with duct tape and stealing several thousand dollars in cash and checks from the store.

Poulsbo Police nabbed Le Beau on May 2 at a Bremerton residence but fate may have played a larger role in apprehending Grantham.

According to Sgt. Bill Playter, the suspect was waiting in a car for a ferry at the Winslow Terminal when he was spotted by one of the Hollywood Video employees, who he had allegedly bound during the robbery on April 28.

“We# got a call from the woman and were advised that the suspect was at the loading area at the Bainbridge dock,” Playter said, noting that shortly after noon Poulsbo Police called Bainbridge Island Police officers, who arrested Grantham at gun point “without any problem.”

The suspect was then turned over to Poulsbo and, according to Playter, confessed to the crime during an interview with Detective Grant Romaine.

“He admitted to it and he’s in jail,” he added, remarking that the arrest was a mixture of luck and good police teamwork. “The caller was one of the clerks at the video store. Because neither guy was wearing a mask at the time of the robbery, there wasn’t much doubt.”
