"IN OUR OPINION Smoke is over at last Friends from other parts of the country were often astonished that the environmentally savvy folks of Kitsap County were still burning their yard waste--instead of recycling it. Smokey leaf piles, slashed timber for construction sites and frankly, anything else that folks thought they could get away with burning has always gone up in smoke around here. Particularly last week, when smoke was thick as fog in some areas. Not anymore! As of Jan. 1, 2001, you may not burn your tree limbs, your Christmas tree, your couch, or almost anything else in North Kitsap. The burn ban is now permanently in effect. The good news is that the air we all breathe will be cleaner and yard waste will be picked up curbside. Not sure if you can burn something? Call 1-800-266-3119 for complete information. "
