Severe weather shelter opens Tuesday night; other services available

BREMERTON — Because of freezing weather conditions, Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management has activated the county’s Severe Weather Shelter Plan.

The shelter will open Tuesday at 6 p.m. Hours of operation: 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Guests will not be able to check into the shelter after 9 p.m.

The shelter is located at Bremerton Food Line, 1600 12th St., Bremerton.

The shelter will serve all residents of the area who require safe overnight refuge where none is available. Future activations will be weather dependent.

Individuals needing transportation to the shelter can get a Kitsap Transit pass from North Kitsap Fishline, 18916 3rd Ave., Poulsbo; St. Vincent de Paul Society, 18943 Caldart Ave., Poulsbo; and ShareNet, 26061 United Road (off Highway 104), Kingston.

Temperatures are expected to dip to 36 Tuesday night, but with overnight snow and a windchill as low as 27, according to the National Weather Service. Rain is expected the rest of the week.

When the emergency shelter is not open, there are other options for people seeking shelter.

Single men can find emergency shelter and other services at Benedict House, operated by Catholic Community Services of Bremerton. (360) 405-9486.

The Kitsap Rescue Mission provides shelter for men through its Fresh Start program. Call (360) 373-3428.

St. Vincent de Paul in Bremerton provides shelter for women and children. Call (360) 479-7017.

Georgia’s House helps homeless women and displaced women and their children. 4846 Auto Center Way, Bremerton. (360) 479-9020.

Kitsap Community Resources provides emergency shelter and transitional housing. 1201 Park Ave., Bremerton. (360) 377-0053.

YWCA ALIVE Shelter provides housing and other supportive services for domestic violence victims and their children. The YWCA is located at 905 Pacific Ave., Bremerton. (360) 479-0522. (24-Hour Crisis Line: 800-500-5513).
