Weekend closures announced for SR 305

POULSBO — If one thinks the $14.7 million State Route 305 widening project is a nightmare now, just wait. There’s more to come as two weekend road closures are planned for July and August.

Although SR 305 itself won’t be closed, Bond Road near the North Kitsap Medical center will be closed from 7:30 p.m July 13 to 7:30 p.m. July 17. The next closure will result in State Route 307 near the Valley Nursery being shut down from 8:30 p.m. Aug. 17 through 5:30 a.m. Aug. 20.

Motorists are advised to plan for delays during weekend road closures, though the Washington State Department of Transportation expects traffic to slow, and not to be brought to a standstill, WSDOT communications specialist Jamie Swift said.

Alternate detours will be provided and access to business and medical facilities will be maintained as crews for the SR 305 widening project install culverts underneath the roads to improve fish migration.

“We do expect it to cause some congestion,” Swift said. “This work is important to completing our schedule. It’s really necessary.”

WSDOT project engineer Jerry Moore forewarned the Poulsbo City Council of the length of the closures at its June 13 meeting, WSDOT construction engineer George Titterness provided the details.

“Hopefully it will be a smooth flow of traffic, and there won’t be many delays,” Titterness said. “But there will be an inconvenience, so people should plan to allow more time.”

Signed detours were scheduled for each closure to avoid using flaggers to stop traffic, Titterness said.

Those needing to access the North Kitsap Medical Center during the closure will still be able to from SR 305. Those needing entry to the apartments on 1st Avenue can take Lindvig Way.

While the closures have garnered much public attention, some business owners along the highway have expressed concerns about left-turn entry to their business once the project is completed.

City Engineer Andrzej Kasiniak said although there won’t be any official turn pockets on the highway, there will be small areas designated for left turns.
