POULSBO — Hoping to protect people and even save lives, Master J.G. Townsend of the Tao-Zen Academy of Traditional Martial Arts will be signing copies of his book “Self-Defense for Peaceable People” from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 15 at Central Market.

Townsend’s book was developed based on his handbook, originally written only for devoted martial arts students. In light of recent crimes against women and children across the nation, it has been readapted for public knowledge in an attempt to increase safety through the Tao-Zen Ryu Shindo system of self-defense.

“It’s for women, kids, old guys, small people ... if some nut snatches them, here’s what to do,” Townsend said. “You don’t need to be a black belt for 40 years. We can teach people in an hour the basics of self-defense.”

Townsend will be joined by some of the academy’s senior faculty. He has been involved in martial arts for 40 years, 15 of those in Poulsbo.

“People are worried about their kids, they should be,” he said of today’s society. “They’re kids that have a right to have a life, and know how to defend themselves.”

Townsend will be signing copies in traditional brush and ink calligraphy. Those yet to purchase the book may do so at the event. For more information on “Self-Defense for Peaceable People” or self-defense classes, call the academy at (360) 697-6663.
