SUQUAMISH — A 43-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene of a single car crash at about 10 p.m. Nov. 24 in the 20000 block of Columbia Street in Suquamish, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.

The 41-year-old driver, a Poulsbo resident, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with unspecified injuries.

It was reported that the driver was headed northbound on Columbia Street and failed to negotiate a curve in the road to the left, deputies said.

The 2007 Mercedes four-door sedan was totaled when it hit an alder tree with its right front fender. The female passenger was ejected from the vehicle at that time, deputies said.

Deputies and crews from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue responded to the incident. Investigators believe excessive speed, along with alcohol consumption by the driver were primary contributors to the accident. The passenger was also not wearing her seatbelt at the time. Investigation of the accident will continue.

The name of the deceased passenger is being withheld pending notification of family members. The Kitsap County Coroner will make a determination of the cause of death soon, deputies said.
