Dancing Paint adorns the holidays in layers of color

POULSBO — One Little Norway art studio is doing its part this holiday season to lighten the load of Santa’s elves.

Hosting its first series of Art Jam Session this month, Dancing Paint Creative Art Studio is bringing an artistic touch to Christmas, offering discounted studio rates, jazz music, tasty treats and door prizes along with its usual smattering of colorful, imagination-inducing fun. Several budding artists were on hand for the first of three jam sessions Thursday evening at the Front Street paint-it-yourself ceramics shop, working away with personal colors and designs to create one-of-a-kind gifts galore.

“It is great to see how people connect with their art as well as the community around them when they come in to paint for the holiday season,” said Dancing Paint owner Christina Veatch.

All ages are invited to take part in the fun. Dancing Paint offers an array of dish ware, figurines, tiles, wall decor, vases, boxes and even tea sets ready for that personal painted touch. Even little ones can contribute a hand print to create a fun, memorable gift. Art teachers are available to show how best to use paints and create a unique masterpiece, and the Idea Counter boasts numerous helpful hints and how-tos.

“It’s just a fun time for them to really come out and get their Christmas lists started,” said Poulsbo Dancing Paint manager Heather Schultz. “We’ve got a huge selection of bisque... it’s really fun to see how creative and artistic everyone is.”

Schultz said novices and the experienced alike can learn new techniques from the mini-art lessons and different ideas the shop has on display, and stamps and stencils are also available for use.

“They’re unique, one-of-a-kind,” she said of the pieces, which make great Christmas gifts for parents, grandparents and friends.

And when it comes to the dreaded craft-time cleanup, Schultz said patrons needn’t worry.

“You make this mess and leave it for us and that’s the best part about it,” she said, adding another benefit is that customers don’t have to invest in their own paints and supplies, as studio time rates cover their use.

Shari Patrick and her grandson Kellen Hanley, 8, took part Thursday night in making a special undersea platter designed with a personal touch. Patrick said the idea of giving such a unique gift was one she didn’t want to pass up.

“I just thought that it would be a fun thing,” she said. “This is a chance to use his art skills in a creative, memorable way.”

Hanley seemed to be enjoying his time as well.

“It’s just fun,” he said.

Melinda Meadows, along with her son Remy, 9, daughter Harleigh, 5 and mother-in-law Barbara, also gave glowing reviews, and said her family had a delightful time.

“It’s fun, we’ll definitely do it again,” she said. “It’s a nice way to spend an evening that’s for sure... we’ll have a house full of stuff before you know it.”

Pieces are ready for pick-up five days after painting is completed. Art Jam Sessions offer three hours of studio time for just $10, normally each hour costs $6. Bisque ware is sold separately; prices range from $5 to $30. The next sessions will be from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 12 and 18 at both the Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island studios. Call now to place reservations at (360) 598-3800 Poulsbo, (206) 842-4092 Bainbridge Island. Dancing Paint also offers birthday party packages. For more information visit
