BREMERTON — Emily Barrantes, a senior at North Kitsap High, is one of five finalists vying for college scholarship funds in the 2008 Puget Sound Energy Armed Forces Festival Ambassadors Program. The students were selected based on their academics, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, letters of recommendation and an essay entitled “What Freedom Means to Me.”

Barrantes, daughter of Kathleen and Luis Barrantes, attends North Kitsap High School. Barrantes has been on the varsity cheer squad for two years, lettering both years. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is involved in the Liberty Bay Foundation. She is also a volunteer reading tutor at Armin Jahr Elementary School. Emily has been on honor roll throughout high school and earned the Washington State University Achievement Award. Barrantes is employed by Mor Mor Bistro & Bar. She is sponsored by EHT Enterprises Inc.

Barrantes will compete against Jamiere Abney, Krystle Membrere, Ashleigh Schiano and McKenzie Thomas, all of Bremerton. The final event of this scholarship program will be at 7 p.m. April 30 at the Keyport Museum. The event is free and open to the public. Masters of ceremonies will be Captain TJ Dargan, Navy Region Northwest, and comedian and Armed Forces Festival Chairman Cris Larsen (aka “The Great Cris).

This is the students’ final judged event. They will do a presentation based on an interview they conducted with either a military veteran or a foreign-born national who has chosen to become an American citizen. Finalists will also answer impromptu questions. Students were previously evaluated on their essays and personal interviews with a panel of judges. In addition, they attended a chamber luncheon and a captain’s tea hosted by Captain Reid Tanaka, Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton.

The ambassadors are competing for college scholarships ranging from $500 to $3,500.
