Early voting has started in earnest in Kitsap County.

Nearly 20 percent of currently registered voters have already cast their ballots for the Nov. 6 General Election, according to the Kitsap County Auditor's Office.

Ballots were mailed to voters on Oct. 17.

County officials said 151,628 ballots have been sent out.

Through Thursday, Oct. 25, a total of 27,769 ballots have been returned. That's 18.3 percent of the total number of registered voters in the county.

The largest number of ballots received by the county during a single day arrived on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when 9,919 ballots were turned in.

The last presidential election in 2008 saw a record turnout in Kitsap County, with nearly 126,000 voters casting ballots.

Voters who have not yet received a ballot in the mail should contact the auditor's office for a replacement.

The deadline to register to vote in person at the auditor's office is Monday, Oct. 29 for voters who are not currently registered to vote in Washington state.
