POULSBO — The Canoe Journey is arguably the largest cultural gathering in the Northwest, with canoes from indigenous nations traveling from their territories to a host nation every year for a week-long cultural celebration.

Since the first event, the Paddle to Seattle in 1989, the Canoe Journey's sphere of influence has expanded; today, the Journey has economic, educational, environmental, political and social impacts. The Herald explored those impacts with a pre-Journey series this year and in its continuing coverage.
