POULSBO — The Kitsap County Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a two-story house in the Virginia Point area early Monday morning.
The home's owners were away on vacation at the time of the fire and the house was up for sale, said Poulsbo Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Matson.
The fire was reported by a neighbor at about 3 a.m. The house was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to a nearby garage and other buildings.
"I heard a loud explosion and when I checked, I noticed the neighbor's house on fire," neighbor Deedee Ellingson told Matson. "Within minutes the house was fully involved. We heard multiple explosions and could feel the heat across the water of Virginia Cove."
The home's owners were contacted and are now driving home, Matson said.
