When no indigenous nation stepped forward and offered to host in 2015 after the 2014 Canoe Journey/Paddle to Bella Bella, the annual gathering of Northwest canoe cultures appeared to be headed toward a hiatus. But canoe skippers wanted to see the Journey continue, and so a new approach emerged: Instead of one large Canoe Journey, there will be several Journeys hosted in various regions of the Salish Sea.

North Kitsap senior Calvin Dennis was dominant Feb. 3 with 19 points and a half-dozen blocks, nearly willing his team to a win at Sequim’s Rick Kaps Gymnasium. But foul trouble kept the 6-foot 10-inch post off the court for much of the first and third quarters, and by the time Dennis fouled out with 40 seconds left, the host Wolves were celebrating a big Olympic League victory.

On March 3, 1915, Congress formed the U.S. Navy Reserve. At 100 years old, the Reserve is older than Betty White, Yogi Berra and Clint Eastwood. Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Kitsap hosted a ceremony at Naval Base Kitsap March 3 to mark the centennial.

North Kitsap students have dodged the outbreak, thus far. There have been 55 cases of pertussis reported to Kitsap Public Health District since June 2014. Nineteen cases have occurred since the beginning of January. Generally, Kitsap County sees about 14 cases per year.

PORT ORCHARD - Kitsap County filed an action March 31 in Kitsap County Superior Court requesting an injunction against Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club for failing to obtain a required operational range permit. In September 2014, Kitsap County Commissioners passed Ordinance 515-2014, which became effective December 22, 2014, establishing a requirement that outdoor shooting ranges obtain an operating permit.
