POULSBO Vinland Elementary school students are emptying their pockets to help children on the other side of the world. Inspired by the words of childrens author Greg Mortenson, the children were moved to action.Mortensons book, Three Cups of Tea: One Mans Mission to Promote Peace
One School at a Time, co-written by Oliver Relin, relates Mortensons own life experience of what happened after a failed attempt to climb K-2 in 1993. The Himalayan mountain is the second highest mountain on Earth.
Mortenson was sick and lost, said Vinland Elementary librarian Debbie Jo Rock. He stumbled into the remote village of Korphe in Pakistan and was nursed back to health by the villagers, who shared with him what little they had.

Blaze, NKF&Rs fire dog, dies at 13
Jun 10 2008, 4:21 PM
KINGSTON Blaze, the famous North Kitsap Fire & Rescue dog, died Tuesday following a brief illness. In every incarnation, be it ambassador, teacher or fashion model, Blaze was a beloved member of the community. He was born on June 7, 1994, in Kingston to Reba and Buttons, members of the Gary Steele Family. The Steeles knew from the beginning the spirited dalmation was destined for a career in a fire department. NKF&R members agreed and adopted Blaze after he was weaned from his mother. Blaze was introduced to the community when the fire department put out a call to the community for names suited to a fire dog.
He was initially assigned to the fire departments operations division, where he was treated to his own seat on the fire engine and got to respond to emergencies. He soon requested a transfer by chewing through radio equipment and seat upholstery. His transfer was granted to the community services division. There, he assisted fire fighters with fire and injury prevention efforts.
Looking back in Poulsbo

One correction before we continue with the look at the first decade of Poulsbo city government. The mention of Borgs Drug Store in our last article should properly have been Boyds Drug store. The second half of the period from 1908-17 continued the building and rebuilding of the city. In 1912 the city finished the survey for a city cemetery. The city council believed the Fordefjord Church cemetery on the hill near town was nearly used up, and they were concerned about seepage from the cemetery into the towns water supply. The site of the present day Poulsbo City Cemetery was chosen, being beautifully located and making just a nice little walk out from town. There is a well that can be used for watering plants. It will have places for nice lanes or avenues.
