State Rep. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge, is the No. 1 choice of Kitsap County Democratic Party precinct committee officers for appointment to the Senate seat vacated by Phil Rockefeller, who is now on the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. On the first ballot, Rolfes received 34 votes, county Planning Commissioner Jim Sommerhauser received six, and Poulsbo City Councilman Ed Stern received three.

Water typing maps — created by the state Department of Natural Resources and relied on by most local governments for safeguarding stream habitat — are widely inaccurate and incomplete. A creek mapped in the wrong place or missed entirely may not receive the development buffers and protections it should under state law. By the same token, a non-existent stream erroneously marked as “fish bearing” can be a headache for property owners.

HANSVILLE — Billed as North Kitsap’s most spectacular opportunity for person-to-person recycling, the Greater Hansvillie Community Center opens its annual rummage sale at 9 a.m. tomorrow, running through 4 p.m. at Buck Lake park. Self-made coaster cars rushed down the S-curve on Benchmark Avenue for hours on Saturday as 10 contestants and dozens of spectators watched the 2011 Hansville Coaster Games. The cars were clocked at speeds of 20 mph or more. The fastest speed was about 28 mph.
