State Rep. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge, is the No. 1 choice of Kitsap County Democratic Party precinct committee officers for appointment to the Senate seat vacated by Phil Rockefeller, who is now on the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. On the first ballot, Rolfes received 34 votes, county Planning Commissioner Jim Sommerhauser received six, and Poulsbo City Councilman Ed Stern received three.

They met the stringent requirements during the application and selection process. They worked, studied and practiced through more than 230 hours of classroom and practical training in the field. And with raised hands and the requisite administered oath of office, 19 candidates reached their goal of becoming commissioned reserve police officers or reserve sheriff’s deputies during graduation ceremonies for the West Sound Regional Reserve Academy, Class 2011-1, July 16 in Suquamish’s House of Awakened Culture.
Kingston man dies in skydiving accident in Montana
Aug 01 2011, 3:09 PM A Kingston man died in a skydiving accident Saturday afternoon in Flathead County, Mont. Zack Fogle, 27, was killed after his parachute failed to open in a jump at Lost Prairie near Marion, according to the Flathead County Sheriff's Office. An investigation found that Fogle did not pull a manual parachute release and a backup release that would have opened Fogle's emergency parachute had not been properly activated before he dropped from the plane. Water typing maps — created by the state Department of Natural Resources and relied on by most local governments for safeguarding stream habitat — are widely inaccurate and incomplete. A creek mapped in the wrong place or missed entirely may not receive the development buffers and protections it should under state law. By the same token, a non-existent stream erroneously marked as “fish bearing” can be a headache for property owners.

Suquamish Early College High School closing for year

The decision by the Suquamish Tribal Council comes after an annual review by the administration determined it will be best to reevaluate how the school operates. HANSVILLE — Billed as North Kitsap’s most spectacular opportunity for person-to-person recycling, the Greater Hansvillie Community Center opens its annual rummage sale at 9 a.m. tomorrow, running through 4 p.m. at Buck Lake park. The sale continues Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Leftover items are free on Monday.

Self-made coaster cars rushed down the S-curve on Benchmark Avenue for hours on Saturday as 10 contestants and dozens of spectators watched the 2011 Hansville Coaster Games. The cars were clocked at speeds of 20 mph or more. The fastest speed was about 28 mph.
