Suquamish Early College High School closing for year

More than 20 students and six teachers will be transferred for the 2011-12 school year as the Suquamish Early College High School closes for a year. The decision by the Suquamish Tribal Council comes after an annual review by the administration determined it will be best to reevaluate how the school operates.

HANSVILLE — Billed as North Kitsap’s most spectacular opportunity for person-to-person recycling, the Greater Hansvillie Community Center opens its annual rummage sale at 9 a.m. tomorrow, running through 4 p.m. at Buck Lake park. The sale continues Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Leftover items are free on Monday.
Kitsap voters will decide tax levy for veterans, homeless

Kitsap County’s three county commissioners Monday unanimously called for a special election for a property tax increase to fund services for the homeless and at-risk, including provisions inserted after public comment to limit administrative costs and allocate first-year funds to capitol projects.

10 contestants vie for glory in Hansville Coaster Games

Self-made coaster cars rushed down the S-curve on Benchmark Avenue for hours on Saturday as 10 contestants and dozens of spectators watched the 2011 Hansville Coaster Games. The cars were clocked at speeds of 20 mph or more. The fastest speed was about 28 mph.

Six candidates have filed for appointment to the 23rd District state House seat to succeed Christine Rolfes, who was appointed to the state Senate in July. The deadline for applications to be submitted to the Kitsap County Democratic Central Committee was Friday, 4 p.m.
Consultant says North Kitsap, Poulsbo fire districts must merge

If the two fire departments in North Kitsap don't act upon their shrinking budgets soon, the outcome could be catastrophic. During an efficiency study review Monday night, consultants from Emergency Services Consulting Inc. recommended North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and the Poulsbo Fire Department merge soon. Consultant Don Bivins said it is fortunate both departments have reserve funds, but those funds are not enough.
Land conservancies raising money to buy 7,000 acres of North Kitsap forest from Pope Resources

Two land conservancies are raising money to buy 7,000 acres of North Kitsap forestland from Olympic Property Group. If successful, the purchase would preserve from development the land and two miles of waterfront on the west side of Port Gamble Bay, keep it available for public access, and free Pope Resources' Olympic Property Group to concentrate on making Port Gamble a more viable year-round destination.
Court dates near for six pranking suspects

Court dates are nearing for six people suspected in a night of pranking June 15, including two drive-by shootings with Airsoft rifles in Poulsbo and two fast-food thefts in Silverdale. Two teen minors are charged with two counts of fourth-degree assault and one count of third-degree theft. They were scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 1, 2:30 p.m., in juvenile court in Port Orchard. Four adults are charged with three counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of third-degree theft, and one count of third-degree attempted theft.
