Kingston's Ruby Roberts wins 1,600-meter championship | State track and field results
Jun 01 2010, 4:40 PM Kingston High senior Ruby Roberts won the state championship in the Class 2A girls 1,600 meters Saturday in Tacoma. Roberts completed the race in 4 minutes, 53.27 seconds, more than six seconds ahead of second-place finisher Annie Moore of Sehome High. Roberts’ time was also a personal best.

Kingston’s Nick Schippers placed third in the boys 1,600 meters, with a time of 4:22.60. Teammate Jaime Schultz was fifth in the girls 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 47.71 seconds, fifth in the long jump, with a distance of 16 feet, 1 inch, and eighth in the triple jump, with a distance of 34 feet, 7.75 inches. The Kingston girls 4x400-meter relay team of Roberts, Tatum Larson, Sarah Wahl and Melia Beckwith placed eighth with a time of 4:12.40.

At the Class 3A state finals, North Kitsap High’s girls relay team of Siara Byers, Melissa Kunold, Addie Carion and Indigo Williams placed second in the 4x100 meters, with a time of 49.50 seconds, and fourth in the 4x200 meters with a time of 1:45.77.

Roberts won the state championship in the Class 2A girls 1,600 meters May 29 in Tacoma, completing the race in 4 minutes, 53.27 seconds. Her time was more than six seconds ahead of second-place finisher Annie Moore of Sehome High. Roberts’ time was also more than six seconds faster than her previous personal best, which was also a school record, and was about one second better than the previous Class 2A girls state record.

“I knew I really wanted to run a fast time,” Roberts said. “But I wasn’t sure how I was going to do.”

Hansville's Point No Point lighthouse awarded $100,000 preservation grant
Jun 15 2010, 2:44 PM HANSVILLE — The Point No Point lighthouse didn't win a recent preservation grant competition, but it did place in the money.

The Seattle-Puget Sound Partners in Preservation Initiative will award $100,000 to the Hansville-based U.S. Lighthouse Society to renovate the historical light tower. It was among 11 Puget Sound landmarks to be awarded grants through the initiative. The results were announced Tuesday morning.
