Poulsbo student receives study-abroad scholarship
POULSBO — Aidan Moore, a West Sound Academy student, has been awarded a Global Leaders scholarship for $3,000 from AFS Intercultural Programs/USA. Moore will study in a Turkish high school for the year, and live with a host family.
Moore is graphic designer of West Sound Academy’s journal of student-submitted art and literature, Mud Pie. He has participated in a national-level History Bowl tournament and enjoys singing and playing the piano. He volunteers with KCMT (Kitsap Children’s Musical Theater) to put on summer camps for elementary aged students and has also participated in school service projects like beach cleanups and gardening.
“My small school of 96 students is lucky enough to have around 20 exchange students, three of which are in my class of 18,” Moore said. “Honestly, the exchange students are some of the most interesting people in our school, and a part of me wants to be like them. I also look at an exchange as an opportunity to learn a new language, something I think is critical to understanding people and the world around us.”
AFS participants learn how to speak another language, navigate in a different cultural context, and marshal a global perspective on issues. These skills are becoming essential in today’s global economy. To make this experience accessible to as many as possible, AFS-USA awards more than $3 million in scholarships and financial aid to outstanding students across the country each year.
For most, the exchange experience is a milestone in their personal and professional lives.
