Cops help kids — and United Way

BREMERTON — United of Kitsap County will host its third annual Kids & Cops Golf Classic on Aug. 1 at the McCormick Woods Golf Course in Port Orchard. This is a four-person best ball tournament with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m., followed by a barbecue on the patio.

Kids & Cops got started when United Way approached the Bremerton Police Department with the concept and asked the police officers to pilot the program. It went so well that last summer the program was expanded to the Port Orchard Police Department and then to the deputies at the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department.

The program works with law enforcement officers who carry vouchers they give to children they see who are in need of food, clothing and school supplies. When a child receives a voucher, the child and their parent can then redeem that voucher for the item the officer has written on it to Wal-Mart, K-Mart, JCPenney or Target.

Businesses interested in helping support this program can contact United Way for sponsorship opportunities. Golfers can also sign up by calling United Way at (360) 377-8505.
