Nathelle Harney passed away peacefully Dec. 30 with her family at her side. She was 76.
Born in Bridgewater, S.D. on Jan. 26, 1936 to Larry and LaVaun Schroeder. Her family moved to the Seattle area in the early 1940s when her father took a job at the Bremerton shipyard.
Graduated from Renton High School in 1954; attended Seattle University. Married Jim Harney in 1957 and had four children. They divorced after 26 years of marriage.
Moved to Poulsbo in 1973. Actively supported her family’s athletic endeavors. Employed in 1985 by the North Kitsap School District; enjoyed working with students as a library assistant at Poulsbo Elementary.
A champion roller skater, great cook, avid golfer and card player, food bank volunteer. Enjoyed socializing with her many friends. Traveled extensively with her long-time companion, Paul Steiling. Became an avid movie-goer.
She was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild and delighted in sharing that pride.
Survivors: children, Colleen Squires (Perry) of Mount Vernon, Tom Harney (Laurie) of Poulsbo, Peggy Harney (Phil Lanzafame) of Poulsbo, Mike Harney (Dina) of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Jessica Harney of Poulsbo, Paul Harney (Alexandra) of Gig Harbor, Alexandra Lanzafame of Poulsbo, Kelly Lanzafame of Poulsbo, Malia Harney of Los Angeles, Cael Harney of Los Angeles; great-grandchild, Jaime Rukkila Poulsbo.
Celebration of Life Jan. 12, 4 p.m., at the Suquamish Community House, 7235 NE Parkway, Suquamish. Donations preferred to North Kitsap Fishline.
