KEYPORT — Service was Aug. 2 at Keyport Bible Church for Alice Mildred Norum Peterson, who died July 29 at the age of 101.
Memorial contributions preferred to Keyport Bible Church or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
Born Dec. 7, 1910 to Anton and Massie Norum in Keyport, the youngest of three girls. Her parents emigrated from Norway.
Class valedictorian of Poulsbo High School, later called North Kitsap High School; graduated from Washington State University with degrees in education and music. Member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. After graduation, taught music in the Poulsbo School District. Married Sankey Johnson, principal of Poulsbo Grade School, on Dec. 28, 1939. A few years later, they divorced and she continued teaching in the North Kitsap School District, often coaching the high school debate team.
In 1947, she married Kenneth Peterson of Keyport and continued teaching school many more years. Kenneth worked for many years at the Keyport Naval Torpedo Station.
She had a lovely soprano voice and sang at church events, funerals, parties and weddings.
The Petersons were active at Keyport Bible Church and were ardent horticulturists, establishing a species rhododendron garden at their waterfront home.
She was a life member of the Pioneer Association of the State of Washington.
Survived by sons, Sankey Anton Johnson (Carolyn), and Philip Peterson, both of California; grandchildren, Marni Nagy and Ron Johnson, both of California; and great-granddaughters, Allison and Kathryn Nagy, also of California.
