Dennis G. Whitney | Passages

Dennis G. Whitney, 70, passed away at his home May 26 with his wife and daughters by his side.

He was born May 15, 1942 in Port Gamble, Wash., the second of five children to Norman and Frances (Larson) Whitney.

A lifelong resident of Kingston, he grew up in his parents’ general store (Whitney’s Grocery) where Kountry Korner now stands.  He became a longshoreman in 1960 and was the last crew to work his home port in Port Gamble before it closed in 1995. He retired in 2004 after a 44-year career.  In 1965, he married Marjorie Fitzgibbons with whom he shared 47 years and raised three daughters. He was a member of Franklin No. 5 Masonic Lodge in Port Gamble since 1976.

Dennis enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and sharing his love of nature with family and friends. He looked forward to fall hunting trips and family vacations. He was known to friends as “Whip” because of his quick wit.  He was loved by everyone who knew him and will be deeply missed.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves his wife, Marjorie; daughters Carla (Jeff) Driscoll of Arlington, Laurie Whitney of Kingston, and Irene (Chris) DeLay of Hudson, Wis.
