About Us

The Herald was founded as the Kitsap County Herald in 1901 by Peter Iverson (who later became Poulsbo's second mayor and served in the Legislature) and his journalist wife, Josephine. Today, the Iversons' newspaper is the North Kitsap Herald, and it's just as indispensable a source of news and information for Poulsbo and North Kitsap as it was in its founders' day. The Herald is published each Friday and has a circulation of 12,439. The Herald also publishes NorthKitsapHerald.com, as well as special sections on various topics of local interest. The Herald is consistently honored for reporting, photography and page design, and its mission since 1901 remains unchanged: To empower our readers and be a catalyst for change in the communities we serve. The North Kitsap Herald won 10 awards in the 2015 Better Newspapers Contest hosted by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association. The Herald won first place for Best Front Page Design, and editor Richard Walker was named one of the best feature writers in the state. In addition, the Herald won other awards for advertising design, special sections, feature writing, and photography.
